Open Cell Sealing & Gasketing Tapes

Made of open cell, compressible PVC, Polyethylene, Polyurethane and various other foams, intended for use in dry applications.

Open cell foam sealants and gasketing materials are usually less expensive and more compressible than closed cell materials. Open cell foams, particularly, are intended for use in specific applications. Because of their open cell structure, most are not used in environmentally sensitive areas, such as outdoors or high humidity areas, mainly due to their characteristic of absorbing / wicking moisture. These foams are very conformable and have excellent sound absorption qualities.

Formulations:

POLYETHER FOAM: Inexpensive, soft and compressible, general purpose foam that will perform marginally well in outdoor applications

POLYESTER FOAM: Very similar in characteristics to polyether, except it can be UL rated, is somewhat stiffer, absorbs sound better, but will degrade outdoors

HIGH DENSITY PVC FOAM: 15-25 lb. density, firm density ideal for vibration dampening, and shock absorption

POLYEHTYLENE FOAM: Various versions available. Non crosslinked can be open cell and is usually found in spacer, dunnage, and cushioning applications

NEOPRENE SPONGE FOAM: Blended material with excellent compression recovery and anti-skid properties

MICROCELLULAR POLYURETHANE FOAM: One of the best foams for abrasion resistance, compression recovery / resistance, shock absorption, and low outgassing

General Purpose Mounting Tapes

Include Acrylic, Polyurethane and Polyethylene foam substrates, utilizing either acrylic or rubber based adhesives and are designed for use in less demanding applications.

General Purpose mounting tapes can be either open or closed cell, depending on the foam substrate used. Closed cell mounting tapes are usually stronger and can perform in a wider variety of applications. These tapes, because of the foam substrate, are energy-dissipating and are ideal for severe exterior (closed cell) applications. The most versatile, polyurethane, is durable in all weather conditions, and provides resistance against UV light, extreme temperatures, fungi, oxidation and ozone. Aside from outstanding weatherability, these materials offer excellent mechanical bonding properties and are formulated for quick-stick and ultra-high bond strength. Some of these materials, depending on the manufacturer have no VOC ( Volatile Organic Compound ) emissions.

Formulations:

POLYURETHANE FOAM: High density, thin gauge, ultra-high bond tape, using an aggressive acrylic adhesive system. Urethane is very conformable allowing maximum surface contact between attached substrates. Urethane mounting tape reduces distortion of mating surfaces by distributing stress within the bond through excellent mechanical properties of the foam.

ACRYLIC FOAM: Usually medium density, used almost exclusively by 3M, Lightweight and available in many formulations, depending on the application. Adhesive system is also an acrylic.

POLYETHYLENE FOAM: Closed cell, low density foam substrate used with either a rubber or acrylic based adhesive system. Depending upon the application, either adhesive system can be expected to form a permanent bond. Rubber based adhesives offer the best quick stick properties in a polyethylene tape. polyethylene is better suited for interior or hidden applications, mainly due to its poor UV light resistance.

TRANSFER ADHESIVES: These products are usually clear or translucent and are considered a dry pressure sensitive tape without a carrier. Some products can be dispensed with a gun and are intended for use in many applications, including low profile areas requiring a very thin bonding system.

DOUBLE-COATED TRANSFER FILMS: Very similar to standard transfer adhesives except for the use of a carrier, sandwiched under, or between the adhesive. These products are offered in a wide variety of options for adhesive system; rubber or acrylic, tackiness, removable to permanent, and carrier; polyester, poly vinyl chloride, tissue paper etc…

High Performance Mounting Tapes

Energy-dissipating, closed cell foam substrates with a high performance acrylic adhesive on both sides, designed for the most demanding of applications.

High Performance mounting tapes are usually closed cell and are intended for both interior and exterior applications. Closed cell foam mounting tapes are stronger and are designed to offer excellent shear, peel, and tensile properties. These tapes are intended to be used in applications requiring a permanent bond, with the exception of some transfer and double-coated film tapes, which have many options in both carrier and adhesive system. These tapes use a ultra-high bond acrylic adhesive system, and offer many design possibilities. Quick stick adhesion does not necessarily guarantee the best bond, these high performance mounting tapes are designed to “wet-out” (make contact with bonding surfaces) across the substrate for 24 hours before reaching their ultimate holding capacity.

ACRYLIC FOAM: Usually medium density, used almost exclusively in 3M VHB’s. Lightweight and available in many formulations, depending on the application. Adhesive system is also an acrylic.

Extrusions & Specialty Items

Include a wide offering form standard profiles to custom extrusions and shapes, made from thermoplastic and thermoset polymers.

The extrusion and profile family of sealing and gasketing products is very large and diverse. Thermoplastic and Thermoset materials are the most common. Closed cell foam and dense polymer extrusions are available in continuous lengths, intricate profile shapes and a multitude of colors. Extrusions are used for reasons of economy, based on large volumes, custom specifications, type of seal, and environment and mechanics of their application. These extrusions are available as “off the shelf” standard profiles, custom profiles manufactured to specification, and with or without Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (PSA). Materials used in extruding foam and solid profiles do have limitations in size and wall thickness that need to be considered early in the design phase.

Formulations:

PVC FOAM: Offers wide range of compression deflection ratios with excellent water and moisture sealing benefits. Available in NSF and UL formulations.

EDPM (ETHYLENE-PROPYLENE-DIENE-MONOMER): Foam Popular choice because of its excellent ozone, weathering and aging resistance. Also has great water and steam resistance and maintains flexibility at low temperatures. Chemical resistance is limited to non-solvent based products.

NEOPRENE (POLYCHLOROPRENE): Has moderate resistance to solvent based chemicals and exhibits good flame, flex cracking (in moderate temperatures), and weathering resistance. Does not do well in contact with oxygenated and aromatic solvents. Excellent all-purpose elastomer with just a few limitations.

NITRILE (ACRYLONTRILE-BUTADIENE): Very good resistance to oil and gasoline. Abrasion resistance is above average. It is superior to neoprene in solvent resistance, but is not recommended for applications where it is exposed to severe weather.

FLUOROELASTOMERS: Provide premium performance and long-term durability and reliance in very harsh and corrosive environments. Exceptionally resistant to heat aging and a wide range of fuels, solvents, and chemicals. They are also resistant to ozone, weathering, oxygen, sunlight, and are inherently more flame retardant than hydrocarbon rubbers. They do have poor resistance to ketones, esters, ethers, amines, and aqueous bases.

TPE (THERMOPLASTIC ELASTOMERS): Are materials with the properties and performance of rubbers but are manufactured similar to thermoplastics. Performance characteristics are similar to that of conventional thermosets such as natural rubber, SBR, EPDM or neoprene. The key to using TPE’s is in their flame resistance, flex fatigue and ozone resistance qualities.

SBR (STYRENE-BUTADIENE-RUBBER): Known for its excellent impact strength, good resilience, tensile strength and abrasion resistance. Maintains flexibility at very low temperatures. Not a good choice in applications involving UV light and ozone.

SILICONE (POLYSILOXANE): Features excellent resistance to ozone, sunlight and oxidation, and is very color stable. It also remains flexible at low temperatures, has outstanding resistance to high heat, low compression set and is a very good electrical insulator. Strength and chemical resistance to solvents are its weaker points.

NOREX FOAM EXTRUSIONS: Proprietary PVC manufactured by Norton Performance Plastics Corporation, closed cell, skinned material, available in a variety of shapes and profiles. Available with or without PSA. Excellent water, moisture, and thermal seal with very good conformability properties.

NOREX BUTYL-COATED FOAM EXTRUSIONS: Proprietary compressible PVC foam inner core with coating of high tack butyl, manufactured by Norton Performance Plastics Corporation.
